Understanding Diamonds with Confidence

Diamond Guide

The 4Cs of Diamonds

The quality and value of a diamond are determined by four key characteristics, known as the 4Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight.

1. Cut : The Sparkle Factor

Cut refers to how well a diamond is shaped and faceted, not its shape. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, creating brilliance and fire.

• Excellent / Ideal cuts offer maximum sparkle

• Poor cuts may appear dull, even at higher carat weights

• Cut has the greatest impact on a diamond’s overall appearance

💡 Tip: Always prioritize cut quality—it can make a smaller diamond look more brilliant than a larger one.

2. Color : From Icy White to Warm Tones

Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).

D–F: Colorless (most rare and valuable)

G–J: Near colorless (excellent value, minimal visible color)

K and below: Warm tones, often paired with yellow or rose gold

💡 Tip: Near-colorless diamonds often offer the best balance of beauty and value.

3. Clarity : Natural Beauty Within

Clarity measures the presence of natural inclusions or blemishes formed during a diamond’s creation.

FL / IF: Flawless or Internally Flawless (extremely rare)

VVS / VS: Very small inclusions, difficult to see

SI: Slight inclusions, often eye-clean

I: Visible inclusions

💡 Tip: Many SI and VS diamonds appear flawless to the naked eye and offer excellent value.

4. Carat Weight : Size Matters, but Balance Is Key

Carat refers to a diamond’s weight, not its visible size.

• Larger carat diamonds are rarer and increase in price exponentially

• Cut quality affects how large a diamond appears

• Slightly under “magic sizes” (e.g., 0.90 vs 1.00 ct) can save significantly

💡 Tip: Choose balance, carat, cut, and setting all work together visually.

Diamond Shapes

Diamond shape refers to the outline or form of the stone. Each shape offers a unique look and personality.

Popular shapes include:

Round (maximum brilliance)

Oval (elongating and elegant)

• Emerald (clean lines, vintage feel)

• Cushion (soft, romantic)

Radiant (architectural, vintage elegance)

Princess (modern sparkle)

Pear & Marquise (distinctive and bold)

Asscher (architectural, vintage elegance)

Heart (symbolic and romantic)

💡 Tip: Shape affects appearance and cost, round diamonds typically command a premium.

Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds

Both options offer beauty and brilliance.

Natural Diamonds

• Formed over billions of years

• Traditionally valued and rare

• Ideal for heirloom and legacy pieces

Lab-Grown Diamonds

• Created using advanced technology

• Chemically and visually identical

• Often more budget-friendly

Choosing the Right Diamond

When selecting a diamond, consider:

• How it will be worn (daily vs. occasional)

• Personal style and metal choice

• Budget and long-term value

• Setting type and finger size
